DORCAS (WOMAN OF VIRTUE IN THE BIBLE)
DORCAS (EVERYONE CAN RELATE HERE)
(Acts 9: 36-41).
This may be a story about a giving woman, but does relate to both men and women in Christ..
Dorcas is the kind of woman who will help everyone but herself, a giving, caring woman the community knew and somewhat relied on in times of crisis. Her reputation for being a compassionate, resourceful and generous person bought her to the point that she had given out soo much that it eventually left her broken.
Let’s link the above to real life situations we’ll probably all be able to relate too. Have you ever offered help to someone and left them feeling drained and even discouraged yourself? Have you ever expected someone to come and check on you but they made no effort to? Or have you given out soo much to people and don’t ask for much back but when you do need help there is no one around to offer assistance? But you’re always the first and last one around for others to get what they need from you.. Like Dorcas I can relate to her in soo many ways from as long as I can remember. I’ll always be there to offer assistance to others regardless of what the issue may be, once I know I am doing the right thing and have Gods backing I know I have always done my best to help them. Even though it may have been affecting me in a negative way, to some extent, what I mean by this is that, people will take advantage to get what they want and being the way that I am I usually realise this late but still help them later on, simply brushing it off giving them the benefit of the doubt.
It is just my nature to help others, see them happy and doing well even if it means there’s a chance of over working myself. Now it shouldn’t be like that and I have learnt the hard way and know much better now. Not to say that I don’t help people but I know the limit to what I can do and what I shouldn’t do to be taken advantage off.
A lesson to all of you who can relate to this, it is good to help others, it is a good act of a Christian man or woman to offer assistance to those in need. If you see others struggling offer a helping hand because God forbid if something bad happened to you, you would want to know that there will be people around who can help you just as you have helped others, now in an ideal friendly world that wouldn’t always be a problem.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, the same people you have helped over the years, amongst them may be a few who wouldn’t even give you the time of day let alone help you like you have helped them.. People change and turn on you for various reasons, they may see you are doing well and aren’t happy with that, pride overtakes their sense of reasoning, some are just ungrateful and others just thrive on the help of others without wanting to give it back. All these negative traits can affect Christians too, not just non- Christians. Do not be fooled, there are weak Christians who act in such manner. At the end of the day we are all human and make mistakes, some more than others live of negativity.
I’ve always said that, people come and go, attitudes are different wherever you go, you will face tough times and realise the true identities of the people around you, whether friends or even for some their family members. But as a Christian that shouldn’t stop you from helping and pleasing God. Jesus was a helper; He healed others, prayed for them, led them through difficult times and died for our sins. Through all the name calling, abuse, negativity Jesus endured not once did you hear Him cry to God that He is fed up and can’t continue any longer. NO!! So Jesus’ examples should continuously be an encouraging factor to us, not to give up, love thy neighbour and be the best we can be. All part of life’s lessons we face and will overcome!!!
Others will forsake you, treat you wrongly, and take advantage of you. You name it but the God that we serve shall never turn His back on us, He is the same yesterday, today and forever more. He has not gone on leave like I always say, He loves us unconditionally, He blesses us, He is our guide in times of trouble, I mean the list is endless what God can do for us and how much He feels for us is not to be compared on the human level NO.. So trust in God alone and see your levels change, enemies shall gather but fear not for God is with you.
Back to Dorcas, she was sick and sadly died, to say the least she collapsed. All the people who had benefited from her kindness all gathered around, reminiscing about all her compassionate deeds. Gathering round mourning her, they all thought it was the end for her and placed her on a table. To some they may have thought that all her giving and helping to others was all in vein..
EVERYONE READING THIS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO REALISE THAT YOU SHOULDN’T HELP OTHERS AND GIVE OUT IF IT’S IN VEIN. IF IT IS NOT GENUINELY FROM THE HEART THEN DO NOT GIVE OUT.. GOD DOES NOT GIVE OUT IN VEIN NEITHER SHOULD WE, LEAD BY EXAMPLE FROM THE MOST HIGH. LET HIS ACTIONS REFLECT IN YOURS TOO!! TOO DIFFICULT THEN COMMITT IT IN PRAYER, GOD WILL HELP YOU.
One important point we can take away from Dorcas’ story is that God sees everything; He never forgets a labor of love. Same way God has not forgotten your ministry, look at it this way for some of the people you may help, they may rise up and walk away after they have received what they needed. Maybe even forgetting to thank you for your sacrifice, BUT NOT GOD!! HE NEVER FORGETS, AND JUST WHEN YOU NEED HIM THE MOST HE WILL SHOW UP. CAN YOU SAY THE SAME ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS??? EVERYONE IS IN IT FOR THEMSELVES, SO DO NOT HEAVILY RELY ON OTHERS, IT WILL JUST END IN DISAPPOINTMENT.
The remarkable part to this story is when God sent Peter to show Dorcas’ friends what God really feels about those who are carers, givers and lover lovers. When Peter came in, he sent everyone else out. All the spectators were removed instantly, and Dorcas lying on the table lifeless was with the only one who could actually restore her back to life. You can’t keep giving and be restored at the same time. Peter speaks to the women of our generation when he says… ‘There comes a time when you must put all others out and allow GOD to REFURBISH YOU. Trees do not continue to bear fruit without rest.’
‘The ground will not continue to yield a harvest without replenishing the soil. And no matter how strong you are, there will come a point in time where everyone must leave you alone in the presence of the only one that can raise you up again…. GOD’
In the privacy of prayer between you and God, allow Him renew and restore you!! Ask Him to water the dry areas in your life!! The scripture says that in the presence of Dorcas’ lifeless body Peter spoke a word to her ‘Dorcas, arise.’
There are probably many empty hearts out there, whether men or women, who have given out soo much to others over and over again. THIS IS YOUR TIME TO ARISE AND BE A SHINING LIGHT, NO MORE DIMNESS THAT IS NOT YOUR PORTION. NO CHILD OF GOD SHOULD BE IN THE BACKGROUND THEY SHOULD BE IN THE FRONT REFRESHED AND FULL OF GOODNESS. IF YOU ARE BURNED OUT, STRESSED OUT, LAID OUT LIKE DORCAS – COLD AND LIFELESS- THEN I AM HERE TO SAY ARISE AND TURN OVER TO GOD HE WILL HANDLE THE REST. EXPECT GOD TO SHOW UP AND RAISE YOU HIGHER.
REMEMBER GOD IS NOT THROUGH WITH US YET! WHAT HE HAS STARTED IN EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US, HE WILL SURELY COMPLETE. THE JOURNEY IS HEADED BY GOD TRUST AND BELIEVE IN HIM. HE HAS A PLAN AND PURPOSE FOR OUR LIVES. YES YOU MAY BE TIRED, WEAK, AND UNSURE ABOUT THINGS WHATEVER IT MAY BE. ITS NOT OVER UNTIL GOD ALIMIGHTY SAYS SO..
AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST LETS ALL STICK TOGETHER AND ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER, PRAY FOR EACH OTHER AND ADVICE EACH OTHER.. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY KEEP GOD AT THE CENTRE OF ALL THINGS YOU DO..
